INTRODUCTION
About CameraLux
CameraLux is about the art of photography, which means a lot of different things to different people. And it’s that diverse range of perspectives that makes photography such an interesting medium.
[Updated: 22 Feb 2025]
CameraLux is about how people express themselves through the photographic image. And so the features you’ll find here will concentrate on aesthetics, ideas, issues, techniques (because a grasp of technique is the door to expression) and portfolios.
In time, you may also find book and zine reviews in these virtual pages.
And there’s an irregular newsletter that includes shorter asides, viewpoints and observations. Sign up to get email notifications.

But why?
Why another photography publication on Medium? There are already several fine titles, including Full Frame.
The fact is that, after than more than four decades earning my living as a journalist, I fancied writing for my own publication. Not that I won’t still write for others. On Medium I’ve contributed to Bertuch’s Garden, Engage, HumanAI and Full Frame, among others.
But I decided that, with CameraLux, I wanted to tackle specific aspects of photography. And so this is going to be a somewhat opinionated publication.
That said, I hope that mine isn’t the only voice here. I welcome submissions from people who have interesting things to say about photography, or the cultural context in which photography exists. For information on how to contribute, see: Writing for CameraLux.
